Abu Dhabi desert safari overview

An Abu Dhabi desert safari takes you from the city to the Al Khatim Desert, a 45–75 minute drive along the E22 highway. Here's what you need to know:

  • Why it's worth it: Abu Dhabi is the only major city in the world with road access to the Rub' al Khali aka the Empty Quarter, and its desert camps are consistently described as quieter and less crowded than Dubai equivalents.
  • Ways to go: Shared or private 4x4 (up to 6 per vehicle), camel trekking, standalone quad bike tour.
  • Includes: Hotel pickup, dune bashing, sandboarding, camel ride, falconry, henna, Arabic coffee & dates, halal BBQ buffet, Tanoura dance, fire show (evening and overnight formats). Some tours contain exclusively just the quad biking or camel riding experience.
  • Best time: Evening for sunset, dinner, and live shows; morning or sunrise for cool temperatures and photography; overnight for stargazing and a desert dawn.
  • Duration: 3 hours (camel trekking) to 17 hours (overnight). Standard evening safari: 6–8 hours round-trip.
  • Good to know: Dune bashing is not suitable for pregnant guests or those with heart, back, or neck conditions. Minimum age for dune bashing: 5 years. Solo quad biking is recommended for users aged 18 and up. All food served at camp is halal. Alcohol is not available at desert camps.
  • Booking tip: Evening and overnight safaris sell out several days in advance on Friday–Saturday weekends. Book at least 3 days ahead during peak season (November–February).

Plan your Abu Dhabi desert safari

Most desert safaris run in one of two locations:

Al Khatim Desert (main safari location) | Find on maps

📍 ~80 km from Abu Dhabi

🚗 45–75 minutes drive

This is where most morning, evening, and overnight safaris take place.

Liwa Oasis (full-day experience) | Find on maps

📍 ~250 km south of Abu Dhabi

🚗 2.5–3 hours drive

Used for full-day desert drives into the Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali).

Best overall: November → February

  • 23–28°C daytime, 15–20°C evenings, with mostly clear skies
  • Comfortable for dune bashing, BBQ dinners, and stargazing
  • December weekends sell out, book at least 1 week in advance

Good balance: March & October

  • Slightly warmer evenings (20–28°C) with fewer crowds and better prices

Getting hot: April → May

  • 30–38°C by evening, morning safaris are more comfortable

Peak summer: June → September

  • 40°C+ regularly, sunrise or early morning safaris are recommended.

All desert safari bookings include round-trip hotel transfers.

  • Pickup and drop-off from your hotel lobby in an air-conditioned Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 or minibus
  • Maximum 6 guests per 4x4
  • Hotels outside central Abu Dhabi may fall under extended pickup zones
  • Private safaris have a dedicated vehicle for your group only.
  • Pickup timing varies by season (based on sunset) and summer pickups are typically 30–60 minutes later than winter

  • Final pickup time is confirmed by the operator the evening before your tour.

  • Light, breathable fabrics (cotton or linen) for the drive and dune activities.
  • Closed-toe shoes or trainers. Sandals and flip-flops slip off during dune bashing and sandboarding and fill with sand.
  • A warm layer for evening and overnight visits; desert temperatures in winter (November–February) drop to 10–15°C after sunset. A light fleece is non-negotiable for overnight guests.
  • If riding quad bikes: long trousers and closed shoes are required. Sportswear is ideal.
  • Avoid denim (heavy, uncomfortable in heat) and loose scarves or long dresses during dune activities.
Beach essentials for snorkeling including a hat, towel, sunglasses, flip-flops, and sunscreen.
  • Cash for on-site upgrades (extended henna, additional drinks). Most camps are cash-only for add-ons. ATMs are not available in the desert.
  • Motion sickness tablets if you're sensitive to off-road vehicles. Dune bashing involves sharp drops and direction changes. Take tablets 30–60 minutes before departure, not after you arrive.
  • Sunglasses with a secure fit. Wind and sand are present at the dunes. Wraparound styles stay on better during the bashing portion.
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ for morning and sunrise formats or summer visits. Desert surfaces reflect heat even in early morning.
  • Power bank for overnight stays. Camp electricity is limited at most standard facilities.
  • Sand-proof bag or zip-lock bags to protect your phone and camera during dune bashing.
Tourist holding a Phi Phi Tours water bottle on a boat.
  • Dune bashing restrictions: Not suitable for pregnant guests; guests with heart conditions, serious back or neck injuries, or epilepsy; or children under 5 years old. All other camp activities remain fully available.
  • Quad biking: Minimum age 18 years for solo riding. Riders under 18 may ride as a passenger on a dual-seat bike with an adult.
  • Camel riding: Most operators require adult supervision for children under 5. Weight limits apply and vary by operator. Riders with serious knee, hip, or lower back issues should consult before the ride.
  • Camp terrain: Desert ground is uneven sand and compacted earth. Standard camp seating is low-cushion floor level.
  • Heat management (summer): If visiting in summer (June–September), stay hydrated throughout. Operators provide water in the vehicle and at camp.

Policies and good to know

Alcohol

  • Alcohol is not available at standard desert safari camps, and it is not permitted inside safari vehicles.

Photography

  • Personal photography and videography are allowed throughout the experience, including dune bashing and camp activities.
  • Drone use is restricted and requires prior approval, so check with your operator before bringing one.

Cancellation & Weather

  • Most bookings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, while last-minute cancellations and no-shows are non-refundable.
  • Safaris run in normal weather, but dune bashing may be adjusted in rare cases of severe conditions.
  • If a tour is cancelled due to weather, operators typically offer a full refund or rescheduling.

Tipping

  • Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for good service.
  • Small cash tips for drivers and camp staff are common.

Ramadan & Public Holidays

  • During Ramadan, safaris operate after sunset, and live entertainment is usually not included.
  • During major holidays, tours sell out quickly, and prices may be higher, so booking in advance is recommended.
